It seems Voltaire has used this phrase in a letter to the Comte de Choiseul, but not about Candide . He was quoting another man's words . " r茅jouir un petit nombre de gens d'esprit " .
If you want to keep it anyway just add before " Le propos de ce livre est de r茅jouir un petit nombre de gens d'esprit ". It will look in in the style of the time and I think nobody will be able to check .
